Training your dog is a long and rewarding. Teach your dog to obey, you are still in the quality of life as well as dog and master. Like any healthy relationship, both parties need to develop an understanding of who is the boss, what are their expectations, and so on.
Imagine being able to take your dog for a walk without being pulled around on a leash. Tell your dog "stay" and I know you do not hold your leash handy. Imagine letting your dog play with the kids and I know no one will need a band aid or disinfectant later.
When it comes to dog training, psychology is simple. Good behavior is rewarded and bad behavior should be corrected. Rewarding good behavior, the dog learns to obey you enjoy, and add a feeling of good behavior. Similarly, the dog learns to avoid the bad behavior, and all the headaches that can cause, and, indirectly, your dog.
That's all it is.
The rewards are quite easily, either by praising the dog, take a deep touch, give a gift, or whatever. Be careful not to overdo it. The awards are awards, not bribes, and if you use the use of rewards as bribes, your dog may learn not to do your bidding, unless you have candy or a tennis ball in hand.
If you find you do not like the idea of over-feeding your dog, you can use a technique called "clicker training". You must use a toy clicker that produces a high. The idea behind clicker training is that you must give your dog treats, and every time he receives treatment, giving a sharp "click". Your dog should eventually begin to associate the click sound for a snack, and then clicking on the good feelings associated with the company.
